all days should be spent by the sea

It has been so wonderful being on Balboa Island/Newport Beach all weekend. It's real life. No 115 degree days, running from air conditioner to air conditioner. California summers, the ocean, the freshness of it all...it's been a needed break. A tall, clean glass of cold water. An escape from the baking sun.
I run around the island in the brisk, damp morning air.
The sound of the waves crash so loudly, they overpower my music.
I smell barbecue in the evening as the sun melts into the ocean.
We leave the windows and doors open all day.
The chilly breeze blows in while we wind down from the day on the couch.
We decide on a late night walk around the island, hand in hand, moon lighting the way.
TV's or reading lights inside beachside mansions allow us to see inside their life.
I feel like I'm intruding, even though they are the ones with homes of glass.
Dinner being cleaned up, dads on the computer, moms watching reality television, grandkids in bed.
Low tide has the waves still crashing, just further away.
Boats and kayaks rest on perfect sand, waiting for the water to come back and lift them to life.
All we hear are our footsteps, crickets, and lapping waves.
No cars, no bike bells, no shouting children.
The daily circle of island life. My cure.
