The Smarter Science of Slim

A well spent $100!

I've been reading a new book, recommended by my father, a "proven and practical guide for weight loss and robust health". I'm not trying to loose weight. However, I am trying to eat healthier.

Surprise news from my doctor last week... I have elevated levels of BAD cholesterol. Whaaaat?! How did this happen, seeing that I eat almost no fat in my diet. Good or bad. Well, there's my answer, says my doctor. I need to eat MORE FAT. Good fat.

High cholesterol runs in my family. Eating good fat helps lower your "bad fat" levels. Amazing how that works. So, basically, I eat too clean. As I've talked about before on here, I had my gallbladder removed, so I need to be careful with the amount of fat I eat at one sitting. So, I ended up avoiding fat most of the time, mostly because I was afraid of what it would do to me! Eating higher levels of fat (good or bad) makes me sick...So I ended up not eating it at all. Bad choice.

Good timing on the book, dad!

So, back to the book. It's enlightening. It's not a diet book. It's a book that teaches how to eat a balanced natural diet, based upon research. The Smarter Science of Slim by Jonathan Bailor.

This book is wordy. It's comprehensive... But the part on nutrition and exercise is life changing. The rest is great too - but I find myself concentrating on these two parts of the book. The first thing it tells you to do: Do not diet. Do not avoid good fat. Eat frequently. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables!

Here is an excerpt that inspired my Costco trip:

Step 1: Eat so many non-starchy vegetables and so much protein that you are too full for starches and sweets. If it is a non-starchy vegetable, overeat it. I am talking 10 or more servings of non-starchy vegetables per day. It's easier if you use a blender (not a juicer ) to mix a lot of any green vegetable with fresh or frozen berries or oranges. Add some vanilla-flavored whey protein powder, cinnamon and vanilla extract. Easy smoothie.

When it comes to protein, the most effective (body fat-burning) way to eat enough protein is to divide your protein intake to at least five 30-gram servings evenly spaced throughout the day. Fortunately, this is easy. Here is one way to do it (protein ideas only, not a total diet plan for the day!):

- Add eight egg whites to breakfast. Scramble them. Microwave them. Whatever. This shot of pure protein jump starts your fat metabolism system and sets you up to burn body fat all day. A whey/casein protein shake works too. Make sure the shake has less than ten grams of sugar in it and at least thirty grams of protein in it. Prep time: 5 minutes.

- Drink a whey/casein protein shake between breakfast and lunch. Same sugar and protein recommendation as above. Prep time: 5 minutes. ( I drink EvoPro by CytoSport. It tastes like dessert, has no sugar and 26 grams protein. HEAVEN in a glass.)

- Eat a double portion of protein along with a triple serving of non-starchy vegetables for lunch. Pre time: no additional time. You have to do something for lunch anyway.

- Drink another whey/casein protein shake (EvoPro) between lunch and dinner. Same sugar and protein recommendation as above. Prep time: five minutes.

- Eat a double portion of protein along with a triple serving of non-starchy vegetables for dinner. Prep time: no additional time. You have to do something for dinner anyway.

Easy, quick, inexpensive protein sources: canned tuna, canned salmon, egg whites, frozen salmon burgers, frozen turkey burgers, fat free or low fat cottage cheese, fat free or low fat plain Greek yogurt, canned chicken.

I have felt FULL ALL DAY and I've ate less calories, and more protein/fat than I have in quite a while. Amazing how that works... There is so much more to this book - this is just one piece of it. But I'm committed to lowering my cholesterol, raising my healthy fat/protein intake (my veggies/fruit intake is just fine!), and being healthy.

I totally recommend this book -- so simple, non-restrictive, straightforward. Life changing stuff. We are all always learning, aren't we?

Comments

Oh man, I don't know if I can do a whey protein shake everyday! Lemme know if you find one that tastes okay. :)
