Maira Kalman is So Moved
I concur. Tocqueville, you were light years ahead of your times. We women are pretty amazing.... Now, all you good men out there, go learn French. Grow a little thin mustache, buy a beret, develop a taste for espresso, read this book, and learn from this smart man. Thank you, and goodnight.

Interesting you bring up Tocqueville. His "Democracy in America" back in the sixties college days...a good read. He was mentioned in church this past Sunday. The thing is, the speaker gave us only part of Tocqueville's actual quote. He quoted "T" as saying "America is great because she is good." But Tocqueville goes on to say, "If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great." The question is, is America still good? We seem to be drowning in corruption and are experiencing a steady devolving of morality and values. Sometimes it seems as though we're beyond the point of no return. Will the Obama man help to change our course? Did Tocqueville really understand what we were to become?

All very good points.... I think parts of society and America are unwaveringly "great". That is why they stand out so much. They never falter when their values are tested, and they withstand the pressures of the ever increasingly evil world standards.... I think it stands as proof of Toc's statement....Those who have stayed true to being 'good', shine in the world and are lauded as being great..... how about the 'peculiar people' we are? i think we're pretty great :)

I think they need to consult the thesaurus and find a substitute for "peculiar". Seems to be too close to "idiosyncratic", "kooky", "oddball" and "creepy". How about instead, "wonderful","singular" or "extraordinary"? Something different....but drop the peculiar tag cuz it feels too much like big ears and a long nose. We could start a church-wide contest. Winner gets free Donnie & Marie box set.

Actually, according to your World Book Dictionary, "peculiar" has several meanings: 1)strange 2)special 3) belonging to one person/thing and not to another. In fact, the term "peculiar people" is also in the dictionary, defined as God's own chosen people (Deut 14:2)! So, I'm with Amy - happy to be special, chosen, and great!
