19th Century Ship Found Under Ground Zero
It was reported recently that the hull of a 32 ft. 19th century ship was found buried 30 feet beneath the surface of Ground Zero. Experts think it may have been used as landfill to extend the New York City shoreline into the River Hudson.
This news story puzzles me.
Expert archeologists have been hired by the city to come in and excavate this almost completely decayed ship BY HAND. I don't know what archeologists are charging these days, but I'm sure it's not pocket change.
Why is the city of New York spending this kind of money?
It is an old ship. It was discarded as "debris" back in the 1800s to create land!
It would be like our future great great grandchildren unearthing a rural landfill and hand picking out 200 year old trash bags full of glass bottles and milk jugs, trying to determine why we hadn't learned to recycle this stuff yet. It seems that there could be many more useful and needy places for NYC to spend this cash.
It was also reported that a large anchor was found next to the ship. They are questioning whether or not the anchor belonged to the ship.... Right...it's probably totally unrelated.
I'm no expert, but I'm employing some deductive reasoning here....I'm assuming the anchor belongs to the ship. I'm also assuming that the city of New York could spend a lot of this money feeding homeless children, or donating it to school without current textbooks, or researching cures for cancer. Just a few ideas, Mayor Bloomberg.
